Receipt No. 1: Queen LatifahRecibo n.º 1: Queen Latifah

There are lines we write that keep showing themselves to us long after we've written them.

I have one of those lines.

"A woman who writes outlives every empire that tried to silence her."
— Sacha

It's from my book, but this series isn't about explaining my quote. It's about the women who make me see it again.

Sometimes it might be a writer. Sometimes a painter. A musician. An actress. A pioneer. Maybe even a woman history almost forgot. I'm not looking for perfect women, and I'm not looking for biographies.

I'm collecting observations: moments when I see something a woman created, challenged, survived, changed or left behind and think, There it is.

The writing is my observation. The woman is the receipt.

My first receipt is Queen Latifah.

I was listening to her verse on DJ Kay Slay's "Living Legend," and all I could think was:

Damn, the Queen is boss.

And she has every right to call herself one.

From the moment she starts, I don't see a woman trying to convince anybody to give her a crown. She's already wearing it. She's sitting on her throne telling you to bow.

And no, you don't get a handshake.

At first that sounds like attitude. Then the Queen starts pulling out the receipts and I realize something: you couldn't get the handshake if you wanted one. You can't reach her. There are too many people between you and that throne.

Movie credits.
An Oscar nomination.
A Grammy.
An Emmy.
A Golden Globe.
Music. Television. Film.
Years of people who watched her work.

Now I'm picturing the Queen with a black-and-gold trunk beside her throne, pulling out receipts every time somebody thinks they've finally caught up.

You have movie credits? Open the trunk.
You have awards? Open the trunk again.
You think you're global? She's been around the world and came back.

And you're still somewhere in the back of the room going:

Excuse me, Emmy.
Grammy, can I get through?
Golden Globe, I'm trying to talk to the Queen.

And the Queen never says, Let them pass.

That's when something else clicks for me: the crowd and the crown.

The crowd is there because they witnessed the work. They watched. They listened. They remembered. That crown isn't on her head because she woke up one morning and decided everybody had to call her Queen.

There are receipts.

But then I start thinking about the ground beneath that throne—not just where the Queen sits, but what she helped build for the women coming after her. And this is where I really see her.

I see the Queen walking through midnight when midnight wasn't safe, when there were things waiting in the dark: discrimination, patriarchy, rejection, and more. And she isn't running. She's strolling. She fought through her midnight so somebody coming behind her could walk through that same space in daylight.

That's what pioneers do. Eventually the thing they fought to make possible becomes so normal that the people who inherit it can forget there was ever a fight.

And sometimes a person walks across the ground she helped build, sword in hand, and starts thinking: Well, I have a sword too. Maybe I'm Queen now.

Okay. But before you challenge the throne, I have a question.

Who got the iron?

Maybe the sword in your hand is yours, but somebody before you helped create the conditions that allowed you to hold it. That's not taking away your accomplishment. That's knowing your inheritance.

The Queen even tells you about the crown. And what I hear isn't simply I taught you that you're a Queen. I hear: I showed you how to position your worth while under attack.

Your crown can tilt. Just don't let it fall.

Queen Latifah has shown that over and over. She can be glamorous. She can be feminine. She can be hard. She can act. She can rap. She can command a screen. She can sit beautifully on that throne.

But don't confuse the glamour with weakness. Cleo is apparently still somewhere in the castle.

And now I'm thinking: Baby, leave that woman alone. 😂

She's been sitting on the throne this whole time. You couldn't get through her crowd. She didn't offer the handshake. She didn't tell anybody to let you pass. And now you've questioned her long enough that she has to get up and come down there herself?

Bad decision.

Because the crowd that wouldn't move for you will move for her. And if Cleo is coming down those stairs with the Queen?

Checkmate.

And now I'm thinking about the chessboard. That's what Queen Latifah looks like to me when I think about where she planted herself: a Queen on the board.

She came through hip-hop at a time when women weren't given equal respect or space in a male-dominated industry. She didn't wait quietly at the edge of the board for somebody to decide she could play. She planted herself there.

Queen.

And then she moved.

Music. Television. Film. Producing. Awards. Recognition. Legacy.

Checkmate.

That's what brought me back to the line from my book:

"A woman who writes outlives every empire that tried to silence her."

When I say writes, I don't only mean putting words on paper. I mean the women who write themselves into places that weren't prepared for them. The women who go against the grain. The women who leave evidence behind. The women who make their existence impossible to erase.

Queen Latifah, to me, is one of those women.

She planted herself in an industry dominated by men and refused to disappear inside it. Decades later, we're still watching her, listening to her, talking about what she built, and walking across some of the ground women like her helped make possible.

That is how a woman outlives an empire.

And that's my receipt.

I don't need to get through the crowd.
I don't need the handshake.
I certainly didn't come to challenge the throne.

I bow to the Queen.

Grammy, ¿me dejas pasar?

Y ahora estoy pensando: Mi amor, deja a esa mujer tranquila. 😂
